Mitchell Swan Stands Strong at 1st Official Ga-10 Debate. Read entire story published by The Walton Tribune, written by Stephen Milligan. MONROE — People from across the region gathered at the Monroe Community Center Tuesday night to listen to the thoughts of the seven candidates running for the District 10 seat in the House of Representatives. The room was packed at the debate between the Republican candidates — Mike Collins, Gary Gerrard, Jody Hice, Donna Sheldon, Stephen Simpson, Brian Slowinski and Mitchell Swan. Vying for the seat held by Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens — who is leaving the seat to run for the vacant Senate seat belonging to retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss — the seven answered a variety of questions on differing issues in the election, from tax reform to healthcare. Various conservative buzzwords came up throughout the night, as most of the candidates urged for the repeal of Obamacare, the passage of the Fair Tax and a return to the values of the Constitution. Some candidates pushed for more drastic actions than others — Simpson argued to dissolve the departments of education, energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, while Swan went after education and the IRS. All said the nation needed better leadership than it currently has. Weve lost moral authority around the world, Swan said. What do we fight for? We dont tell the world what we stand for. Slowinski echoed those thoughts. We have weak leadership in Washington, D.C., he said. We must show them our resolve. Patty Tefel came to the debate from Green County and said she was impressed with the event. I thought it was amazing, she said. It was very informative.
