Hello shipmates! It is my honor and privilege to welcome a special guest to Naval Station Great Lakes and Recruit Training Command this week. Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Admiral Jonathan Greenert, will visit and attend a recruit graduation on the morning of Friday, August 9. He will be joined by Congressman Mike Quigley, the representative of the 5th District of Illinois. It’s always a pleasure to have such distinguished guests visit and I’m sure the RTC staff, graduating recruits and their loved ones will get a special thrill over their presence. Summer is quickly winding down, and it won’t be long before our students return to their respective NROTC and NJROTC units to begin another school year. I know that for freshmen who are just starting out in both programs, there might be some nervous feelings before initially joining their new units, but I know I can depend on current midshipmen and cadets to help integrate their new teammates into the fold. In helping the new personnel integrate, you may find that you have some leadership traits that you weren’t even aware of. Remember some of the challenges you encountered upon entering the programs and use that knowledge to help others. Time of year doesn’t really matter at OTC and RTC, where our outstanding instructors, facilitators and staff members continue to train our newest officers and enlisted. Our RDCs and Drill Instructors are second to none in their devotion to training our future Navy and I can’t thank them enough. As always, put safety first when you are out there participating in summer activities. Remember who you are and what you stand for. If the words honor, courage and commitment are imbued in your value system, you will never go wrong. Enjoy the rest of your summer and carry my best wishes with you.
