Here are Eldorado results. The good news is that I figured a method to put both sets of graphs on one attachment. All the rest of the news is quite bad. The results this year were beyond bad, beyond a disaster. It is hard to come up with a word to express the complete meltdown at Eldorado. Where do you start. On the acceptable level, LA was down 25%, Science 13%, Social 30%+ and Math 20%+ over the previous year. Furthermore, these subjects are below provincial averages by 24, 20, 40 and 25% respectively. Comparing the current year to the last year marks were given at Eldorado (2010 - a year later than Evergreen and Aurora), results have dropped 28, 35, 49 and 30% respectively. As much as I believe the lack of proper grades had a lot to do with these results, even I do believe there are more problems at Eldorado. A huge drop in 2014 could only happen with the negligence of the administration, and the superintendent, his assistants and staff. The problems had to be so huge that any supervisor would have seen this happening throughout the year. Maybe they did, and maybe corrective measures were implemented to help. I suspect that either everyone dropped the ball and did not perform their duties properly, or they discovered the problem to late to correct it, which would also be considered a major dereliction of duty. I can’t imagine how the parents of the students must feel, or will feel. They will probably get their childrens PAT results after the first report card sometime in November, and there will be shock, horror and anger. I further wonder how the school communicated these results to the parents, and what, if anything, was done to correct the downturn. If any parent at Eldorado can shed some light on this, please post on our group. Let me put this into some real student numbers. In 2010 there were 25 students writing the LA grade 6 PAT. 24 passed and 3 passed by excelling. In 2014 there were 36 writing and the same number, 24 passed. Only 1 student failed in 2010. In 2014, 12 students failed. In 2014, not a single student passed by excelling. In 2010, 25 students wrote the Math grade 6 PAT. 22 passed and 7 passed by excelling. In 2014, 36 students wrote and only 20 passed. Only 3 failed in 2010, but in 2014 16 failed. Only 1 student passed with excelling. In 2010, 25 students wrote the Science grade 6 PAT, and every single student passed, 6 with excelling. In 2014 36 wrote the PAT and only 23 passed, 2 with excelling. There were no failures in 2010, but 13 in 2014. Lastly in social, 25 students wrote the PAT in 2010, and 22 passed, 3 with excelling. In 2014, 36 wrote the PAT, and only 14 passed, 1 with excelling. 3 failed the test in 2010 compared to 22 failing in 2014. More than half the class failed the exam in 2014. Excelling results are almost non existent, with 0, 1, 2, and 1 respectively in 2014. So what happens to these students, and the underperforming students from Evergreen and Aurora, when they go to junior high school? I can’t imagine the frustration and the problems this creates at HW Pickup. We are hoping they are miracle workers, and in some cases they are. They are a bright spot in Drayton Valley when it comes to education. They were not always a bright spot, but have improved their performance by leaps and bounds, and appear to be in the upper echelon of junior high schools in the province. But we cannot always expect the staff at HW to take the under prepared and under educated students from the elementary system and not only catch them up, but then help them soar. We are all fooling ourselves if we think that can continue indefinitely. Change must occur at the elementary level. WE MUST IMMEDIATELY BRING BACK GRADES. The Administration and the Politicians surely must now realize this experiment is a failure, and the problems need to be corrected. They should step up and quit hiding behind excuses. One of the most common is “We cannot be sure this is being caused by the new Outcome Based Reporting to the parents.” That type of excuse in my eyes is the equivalent of telling an Ebola patient that we are not sure if he is dying from Ebola or something else. The Administration and the Politicians need to show their strength and leadership. It does not take a lot of strength or leadership to hang on to a system such as this. True strength and leadership is shown by letting go and admitting failure. Let’s hope we have a few leaders in those ranks. The next results I will analyze will be HW Pickup, followed by the Wildrose Rose School Division as a whole, and then I will analyze Drayton Christian, St. A’s and Holy Trinity. Please bear with me as this does take some time to properly analyze each set of results.
