Here are some final tips from Sister Lilian about lovemaking after giving birth. If there are physical problems, some of these may help you: If a vaginal delivery was poorly managed or a big episiotomy (a cut to increase the size of the vaginal outlet) was done, or one tore badly (unnecessary if a more natural birth is supported by midwife and/or doctor, for instance with upright birthing positions), one’s perineal area may be damaged and either take quite a while to recover or lead to problems with urinary incontinence and/or lovemaking. Doing vaginal pinching and other pelvic strengthening exercises after birth, like stopping the flow of urine in the middle of passing it, helps return strength to the vaginal walls and perineal muscles. In the first month, pain may be associated with infection, but there would usually be other symptoms too, like fever and discharge. One can make love while breastfeeding without any harm to baby – in fact the hormones of breastfeeding help relax women and are the same as those produced when making love, so there’s a link! Don’t worry if some milk leaks! Take the tissue salts Calc fluor (for elasticity of tissues) and Ferrum phos (for strength of muscles in the area). Sister Lilian
