Here is a recap of the 2012-2013 Merrill High School Golf Team recap from High School Golf Team Coach - Coach Joe Mertens: The boys bluejay golf team had one of their best finished in years. Highlights included Freshman Max Baranczyk leading the varsity team with a scoring average of 84.6 followed by Junior Mike Pagel 85.8, and Senior Coty Guenther 86.0. Freshman Brett Woller lead the JV team with a 9 hole scoring average of 48.2. Low individual scores for the team were 74 at Stevens Point CC shot by Mike Pagel, and 78 at Greenwood Hills CC by Coty Guenther. The team finished 2nd place in the valley conference having improved from their 6th place standing the year before and did so with an improved 13.7 stroke team average over 2012. The JV team won their match in Merrill and Crane Meadows and finished 3rd at Pine Valley and American Legion meets. In Conference, Mike Pagel and Coty Guenther finished 2nd team all conference and Max Baranczyk third team. The Bluejay golfers also won their home invitational in both the team competition and 2 man best ball events. To top it off, the Bluejays also won their first ever Wausau City meet against East, West and DCE. Both Max and Mike also qualified for and competed at Sectional competition. As for team awards, Max Baranczyk took home the most valuable player award, Mitchell Finnegan the Most Improved, Coty Guenther our team leadership award, and Brett Woller our JV MVP player. The 2014 team will begin indoor open practices again in early March followed by qualifying in early April and competition to follow.
