Here is my speech for the press conference Im speaking at (that is happening in 2 minutes, so I should probably get off of the Internet.) My name is Christine Greenberg and I’m the owner of Urban Set Bride and Wood Grain & Lace Events. My business partner/mother and I would like to thank Bon Secours, Capital One and Virginia LISC for their generosity and continued support. I’ve been a wedding planner for two years, and when my mom and I decided that we needed to create a new kind of bridal shop for the hip, off beat bride, we knew the shop’s location had to match that mindset. We could’ve easily opened up at libbie and grove, or carytown, or placed ourselves in the west end amongst our eight competitors. But we knew that we wanted to be part of the change we hoped for, rather than trying to keep afloat in more expensive commercial markets. To us, Church Hill is a perfect example of Richmond as a whole. You could move to New York, Chicago or DC and fight to keep up. Or you can do great things in Richmond and help the city continue to grow into something noteworthy. We are beyond grateful to be an example to every out of town bride and their families as they bring their business to Church Hill, some for the very first time. They enjoy breakfast and a strong coffee at Sub Rosa Bakery or WPA Bakery, have a cozy dress shopping experience at our shop, pop next door to reward themselves with a little something from Chocolates By Kelly and then have lunch at Union Market or Proper Pie Co.. The comment that we hear the most, especially from those born and raised in the suburbs of the city is “wow. This isn’t the Church Hill that I’ve always heard of.” And it’s not because we have a Panera bread and shiny new condos that have pushed out the original residents of our historic neighborhood. It’s because we have a beautiful mix that welcomes new people in and embraces the current residents to stay and help us make this neighborhood even more enviable. I’m so proud to say I’m a minority woman who was able to realize the dream of small business ownership in a community that supports progress, respects history and the differences among us, and we can all move forward together. And that’s why everyone in the Fan is jealous.
