Game # 017 of 162 Truro Tempests – 9 – 14 – 0 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers – 8 – 10 – 2 WP: Rollie Fingers (A&B XZ) LP: Clem Labine (B Y) SV: Eric Gagne (A&B KXYZ) HR: Belle, Griffey, Sosa (Tempests) Furillo (Dodgers) Attendance: 32,014 (Ebbets Field) Notes: The 1955 World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers thrilled the faithful of Ebbets Field early by ripping Ron Guidry (1978 - A&C XZ) for 7 earned runs and chasing him after just 1 official inning of work (as he pitched into the 2nd inning, but failed to get an out). Dem Bums scored 4 runs in the 1st inning, hilighted by a 3-run homer by Carl Furillo. The Tempests struck back with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning on an Albert Belle (1994) 2-run homer, and Joe Mauer (2009) after doubling and moving to 3rd base came home when Ichiro Suzuki (2004) hit an easy fly ball to right (53-15) of which Carl Furillo, borrowing a page from Bump Bailey, said, I lost it in the sun (Blinding. - Pop Fischer, 1939 New York Knights). However, the Bums chased Guidry, and hit a sacrifice fly and doubled in a run off of Vida Blue (1971 - A&C XZ) and made in 7-3. The Tempests cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the 3rd inning on a bizarre play. Jeff Bagwell (1994) led off with a double, moved to 3rd base on an Albert Pujols (2003) ground-out, then Belle (62-22) hit a grounder to Pee Wee Reese, who threw home, and Roy Campanella dropped the ball (Safe at 1st, FC; runner scores on error; A-SS E-C - Fielding # 1). Then there were nothing but goose eggs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. The Tempests brought in Rollie Fingers (1981 - A&B XZ) to try to hold the Brooks. Ken Griffey Jr. (1994) made it 7-5 with a solo homer over the Scaeffer sign, but the Dodgers touched up Fingers for 1 run in the bottom of the 7th inning to make it 8-5. Johnny Podres (C X) was pulled after a solid 7 innings, and the Dodgers brought in Clem Labine (B Y) to try to close the door on The Boys from Truro. George Brett (1980) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Ichiro in the top of the 8th to make it 8-6. Fingers work a perfect 8th inning. So, the Tempests were down 2 in the top of the 9th inning. Labine fanned Belle, Griffey singled, and Mauer was pulled for pinch-hitter Mark McGwire (1998) in hopes of tying the game with one swing, which...he never got to do, as he drew a walk, and was promptly pulled for pinch-runner Joe Morgan (1976). So, with runners on 1st and 2nd base, Cal Ripken (1991) was also pulled for a pinch-hitter, Sammy Sosa (2001), who smashed the 1st pitch from Labine (33-1) off of the light tower in center-field, amazing virtually everyone contained within the Brooklyn Ballpark and making it a 9-8 game in favor of Truro. The Tempests brought in Johnny Bench (1970) for Mauer, Alex Rodriguez (1996) for Ripken and Eric Gagne (2003 - A&B KXYZ) for Fingers. Gagne got the Bums 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning to save an amazing win. Rod Carew (1977) went 3-4 extending his consecutive hitting streak to 12 games. The Tempests are now 15-2 and head from Ebbets Field to The Polo Grounds will they will take on the 1933 New York Giants in another great pitching match-up. Pedro Martinez (1999 - A&C KXZ) vs. Carl Hubbell (A&C YZ).
