Thursday,February 6 – 6:30-8:30 pm The Historical Jesus; His Times and the Seeds of Christianity Jesus was born into a highly volatile world. The Palestine of the first century was dominated by the Roman Empire and Judaism was fragmented into many different movements. Some of those movements were actively expecting God to restore the Kingdom of Israel to its former independence and glory that it had during the reign of King David a thousand years before. Some were even expecting this restoration to effect the whole world! Where does Jesus fit into all of this? How does understanding the religio-political zeitgeist of the first century help us to understand Jesus, his movement, and what would become the seeds of Christianity? Sean McDaniel studied at St. John’s Seminary and Boston College and holds his degree in Philosophy and Theology from St. John’s Seminary. He has been teaching Biblical Studies, Church history, and Western Philosophy at St. John’s Prep for 19 years. 3. Tuesday, April 15– 6:30-8:30 pm To Read or Not to Read Shakespeare? Here at St. Johns, students read Shakespeare during three of their four years. Why? Why does he hold such a disproportionately higher status than any other writer in English-speaking history? This question will be the theme for our discussion. We will read and watch some short scenes of his best plays as well as read some of his shorter poetry. Come and enjoy this interactive exploration of why this 400-year-old poet and dramatist a still a vital part of who we all are and how we process the world. Jay Pawlyk is a 1991 graduate of St. Johns Prep and holds degrees in English Literature from St. Anselm College and The Catholic University of America.
