Here some things going on in the park for the month of January - UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA JAN 10 – FEB 16 BOULDER CITY, NEV. – The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 10 through Feb. 16. Ranger Program: Wingspan Myths, Jan 10 and 11 Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 10 and 11 to learn about the wingspans of a variety of desert birds. Participants can compare their arm spans to these creatures of flight. Call 702-293-8990 for more information. Running from an Angel Marathon, Jan 10 Around 320 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 10 during the Running from and Angel Marathon. The race includes a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon along Lakeshore and Northshore roads. Ranger Program: The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land, Jan 17 Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 17 to learn about the animals and plants that call the Mojave Desert home, from the desert bighorn sheep found in the rugged mountains to the smallest beavertail cactus life abundant and thriving in what many think is barren landscape. Sunset Sing-along, Jan 17 Gather at the at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater 4 p.m. Jan. 17 as Mike Kershaw and his acoustical guitar leads visitors in a song-fest, singing familiar children songs, popular songs of today and some original songs. Call 702-293-8990 for more information. Fee-free day, Jan 19 Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 19 in celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply. Ranger Program: Public Lands: Treasures of Southern Nevada, Jan 24 and 25 Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 24 and 25 to learn about the variety of public lands that surround the Las Vegas Valley. Sunset Program: Bats - Friend or Foe, Jan 24 Join Ranger Yolanda at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater to learn about bat myths and how the flying mammals benefit the planet. Call 702-293-8990 for more information. Majestic Canyon Hike, Jan 31 Hike up a colorful, winding wash that ends at a dry waterfall with Ranger Thomas Jan. 31. Enjoy spectacular cliffs along the base of the River Mountains. This moderate hike is approximately 2.5 miles with an elevation gain of 300 feet. Ranger Program: Park Invaders: Non-native Species, Jan 31 and Feb 1 Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 as park rangers share the story of the non-native species that have invaded the recreation area. Watercolor Painting Demonstration, Feb 7 Sharon Schafer will be painting watercolor at the Lake Mead Visitor Center Feb. 7. Fee-free day, Feb 14-16 Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Feb. 14-16 in celebration of the Presidents Day weekend.
