Heres a beautiful tale of group transformation that warms my heart and surprises me at the same time: When my group got migrated to a new floor, under new management, in a new department, the transition was tough. We are a group of engineers that get stuff done by working with people. Mostly extroverted, entirely heart-centered. We were commingled with true engineering types: mostly introverted, analytical, not unkind, but not entirely welcoming of the new kids. Id been snidely told that its been very crowded lately when getting morning coffee, and received mostly grunts in response to a cheery, Good morning! Okay, I get it. There was a group discussion this week about making employees work life better, and I got to share that my former group had an award-winning level of employee engagement due to simply put, kindness. We were all just genuinely nice to each other, including our management. Thats missing here. I thought Id be shunned at that point, given the not-so-kind welcome. Surprise, surprise, by the end of the meeting, there was a genuine consensus that everyone wanted a friendlier work place, they just didnt know how to make that happen, or were afraid to openly challenge the status quo. It was agreed wed all plan out action items to create and sustain a Positive Culture. Not in a hundred years would I have thought that group-level change would be possible, let alone supported by everyone. Bada bing bang blam blammo... All ya need is Love.
