Heres another reason for you to join this page: Forgotten Iowa: Hawkeye State History Architect Louis Sullivan designed the Van Allen Department Store in Clinton, in 1913-14. It is constructed of steel columns and girders with heavy timbered floors, and cost $126,226. The terracotta ornaments on the front were sketched by Sullivan on the back of a blue print. While it was being built, Sullivan sat on a keg of nails across the street to watch and supervise its construction. Located at 5th Ave. S. and 2nd St. in Clinton, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
