Hey George, what is a New York Deli? We often use phrases to help - TopicsExpress

Hey George, what is a New York Deli? We often use phrases to help conger ideas in our minds. Marketing firms have taken hold of this and use this to sell products that sound great but have very little truth or meaning. Let’s look at just a few. Black Forest ham, or Schwarzwälder Schinken in German, is a variety of dry-cured smoked ham, produced in the Black Forest region of Germany. Ham is the thigh and rump from the haunch of a pig or boar. What you buy in the market is caramel color water and bi product of ham. How about Canadian bacon? Sorry, you won’t find it in Canada. It is supposed to be a smoked ham or pork loin but instead it usually is a ground mixture of ham water color and you name it. It is second only to pepperoni pizza. Canadian bacon and pineapple is a great favorite. So that brings us to a New York Deli. This puts in mind immigrants from all over the world serving delicious tastes from their homeland. The Jewish specialty is corned beef, pastramis, ryes and other quote “delicacies”. Recipes handed down from generational and regional recipes. This is how we got the word delicatessen. I had an opportunity in November to visit a true New York deli. I wanted to visit one with no tourist connotation. After a tour of Central Park I had asked our guide a man of many years, born and raised in the area about a true non tourist deli. We took his suggestion and went to local place called Arties. Martha Stewart enjoys this place as no one recognizes her there. We found ourselves in a bustling well used deli where customer service was not needed. After about a 30 minute wait for lunch at about at 2.30, we were seated with a small plate of pickles some full sour and some half sours. After looking at some of the regular items, chopped livers and such we decided to eat true pastrami and corned beef sandwich. I ordered the one with corned beef and pastrami served warm on rye coleslaw and a touch of Russian dressing. Yes it was sandwich nirvana for me. There was about 6 oz of meat on two thin rye slices. What was the price? $18.50. The customers in the deli were your normal everyday people, some like us at Deli George! our regular customers. I finished lunch with you guessed it, a slice of New York cheese cake. Unbelievable!!!. There is no true New York deli in Idaho, not even Deli George! We are not as customers able to afford the price and as operators we can’t even get the product. But Deli George! is as close as you will find in Idaho. The second generation of George is taking over. He is also the second born American in our family, as we are from a German Czech heritage. So we are able to offer a great special corned beef locally produced, pastrami from Los Angeles, Swiss from France, and rye from Boise. We will offer this sandwich inspired from our visit to New York. Corned beef, pastrami, rye bread, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing, with 8 oz of meat, served warm. This will be as close to a New York experience as you can find in Idaho. How much, $18.50? NO! How about $10.99 and a true opinion of what you think? At Deli George! we are looking toward the future to of serving authentic European Delicatessen food without the hype and tricks. Look for the George’s and don’t forget mama George She likes to be called Lesley at the deli. We are looking forward to sharing our love of food and life with you. George.
