Hey all. New years is on the way and many resolutions will be - TopicsExpress

Hey all. New years is on the way and many resolutions will be fitness related. The most common one I hear in gyms revolve around losing fat around the abdomin and strengthening the core. As your friendly neighbourhood back specialist I feel compelled to offer a few points of advice before you embark on your journey. When people think of the core they mostly just think about the abs (rectus abdominis). Its not your fault, media and misleading magazines over glorify this muscle to the extreme. The fact is there are actually about 7 prime muscles that work together to stabilize the spine. If you only work your abs with endless crunches and sit ups you are missing out on a lot of potential gains. In order to have a strong core you need a well rounded routine to get all the areas stimulated. Be sure to have a movement that works the front and back as well as a twisting movement for the obliques. Hundreds of sit ups will not get you to where you want to go! As my client below demonstrates, once you have a well rounded core you can safely perform advanced movements like an ab rollout. If your lower back rounds or you feel pressure it means you are not ready for an exercise! No matter what your goals are, be patient and progress at a medium pace.
