Hey guys, hope youre having a good summer! Im passing on a message from the department regarding a course newly added to connect, GENS 4991, which will be run by the departments new professor Dr. Joshua Kurek! Theres limited enrolment in the course and you need instructor permission so please give him a shout if youre interested. Its on Paleoenvironmental Methods and from what I understand, each student will be given the chance to do their own research project regarding the oilsands region! An introduction from Josh: Hi! I wanted to introduce myself to the GENS student community. I am a new prof from Kingston, ON and I am very excited to be back in the Maritimes after several years at Queens. My research focuses on how the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems is impacted by long-term environmental change. My specialty is paleolimnology and I use aquatic invertebrates as bioindicators. At MtA I plan to integrate both undergrad (and eventually graduate students) in projects investigating oilsands pollution and rock snot blooms in Canadian salmon rivers. This year I will be teaching 4 courses: Physical Environment, Weather & Climate, Global Stressors of Freshwater Ecosystems, and Paleoenvironmental Methods. The methods course will be a limited enrollment of 5, as students will be completing independent research projects from samples I collected in the Athabasca oilsands region. I will be mentoring students in paleoenv methods and the class will be working together as a research lab to investigate impacts of oilsands development. Let me know if you have any questions about the methods course. When you are back in town please drop in and say hi. My office is AVDX 305 and my lab is AVDX G3. You can also see my background and interests by searching Google Scholar and Twitter.
