Hey, this is America! All anyone cares about is M O N E Y. Increasingly, its all that seems to matter. So unless someone can make a profit off saving education, society or the planet itself, it aint gonna get done. And youd have to, in the process, dismantle the fabulously profitable schemes that are helping to destroy society and the planet. Those doing the profiting are extremely powerful and will fight tooth and nail to preserve their way of life. America is a slave to its economic system. As we all should know by now, our system is set up for the benefit of a tiny minority of ultra-wealthy people and groups. But Capitalism is becoming obsolete. It has gotten us this far, but it is breaking down as it is overtaken by technology and an increasingly aware public. We are on the verge of dramatically reducing scarcity and increasing productivity. Capitalism needs scarcity to work. Look what happened when music and movies went digital. The powers that be didnt know what to do because now that music and movies (and lots of other stuff) could be copied and shared at almost no cost, their monetary value disappeared. We have the knowledge and technology to enable everyone to work less, and have all of their basic needs met. We will soon have cleaner, more abundant energy that costs much less to produce than it does now. We have the capacity to educate people not just for a job, but as creative human beings who can pursue their true interests. But our economic system wont let us do any of that, because it needs scarcity to keep us all on the hamster wheel. It doesnt know what to do with abundance except devalue it. Hopefully we can muster the political will do do something about it. But that kind of will usually only comes about when we are staring destruction in the face. By then it may be too late. Maybe those who survive will remember how we got into this and how we couldnt get out. maybe.
