Hi All, Further to our earlier post we just wanted to update - TopicsExpress

Hi All, Further to our earlier post we just wanted to update you and reassure everyone that Lucky is our first and foremost main concern and priority. We are continuing our efforts to remain focused on Lucky to ensure she is receiving the best care and expert advice by specialist vets, who have vast experience and success in treating animals in similar circumstances. Since our family found Lucky 18 days ago, we have worked tirelessly campaigning in order to seek the best possible vet care for her. We rushed her up to Joondalup Central Vets within 30 minutes of this horrific incident where she was admitted immediately and given pain relief. We made the decision to save her life from picking her up at the roadside and then making the decision not to have her euthanized. She has received exceptional care with Joondalup Central Vets who have been outstanding in their care of Lucky. After many discussions with the vets they made numerous enquires and advised us that we could get emergency appointments with a top neurologist and orthopaedic surgeon. This was arranged very quickly bearing in mind the Christmas/New Year period. After consults with Tom (orthopaedic surgeon) and Fiona (neurologist) at Rivergum the next step for treatment was made. Lucky’s stump needed closing due to the gaping wound being open and exposing bone. The longer this was open the more likely Lucky was to get an infection that could take her life. Being faced with this, the only option was to close the stump with skin grafts. There was no way we could have left her wide open to get a fatal infection. Since then Lucky has been on strong antibiotics and under observation. Last Saturday evening, at approx 10 pm, being extremely vigilant and dedicated to Lucky’s health we rushed her down to an emergency vet hospital in Perth (Perth Veterinary Specialists). We were not prepared to wait a further 12 hours in order to get her seen Sunday morning and acted instantly. We were attended upon by a lovely vet there, Rebecca. We explained that we were worried that Lucky’s leg had become infected as we could smell an odour from the bandage. After examination, Rebecca reassured us that the odour was most likely coming from the padding which had been stained from Lucky’s surgery and started to smell. Rebecca checked the bandage by removing the top layer of it to ensure that no fluids had been leaked from Lucky’s stump then re dressed it. Rebecca explained she was happy that Lucky’s wound was not infected. To be vigilant and concerned about Lucky’s ongoing treatment she arranged an emergency appointment for Sunday morning (next day) to see Tom at Rivergum again to assess the wound. It was then that we were advised that 50% of the skin graft had been successful but sadly the other 50% had failed, this means that Lucky will have to ensure further skin grafts to fix the other 50%. This is a long process, it cannot be rushed as there is “no quick fix”. Until the stump has been successfully closed and allowed to heal properly as the skin is very fragile at the moment (only 1mm thick), Lucky cannot have a prosthetic leg fitted. This will come in time –as soon as Lucky has healed. With regards to the paralysed front leg. We were initially advised by Rivergum not to have acupuncture as it was early days and Lucky was having to endure enough with the surgery and trauma of the open wound on her back leg being closed and regularly needing changing with sedation. We discussed this with the emergency vet Rebecca and the options of having acupuncture for Lucky. She advised that she thought it would be beneficial. She made a referral to Murdoch and asked us to contact them by phone of which we did several days ago. We had already spoke with Marrisa Chan there by email who agreed to see Lucky if we wished to proceed. We are also making enquiries with several acupuncturists for their advice and opinions and we will be booking Lucky in soon for some treatment once we are in a position to do so. We have devoted many hours a day to the care of Lucky. We are spending time on Facebook to let you all know how Lucky is doing as we feel it is so important to thank you all and keep you informed as to her progress. Since we found Lucky she has been reviewed by four vets and two specialists. Rivergum and Joondalup Central Vets have emailed Noel Fitzpatrick overseas to request his teams opinions. Unfortunately, as Lucky’s owners we have been told we are not able to directly liaise with Noel all discussions have to be held between the referring vets. As soon as we hear anything we will report it to you in Lucky’s status. We also contacted Orthopets in Australia a couple of weeks ago who emailed and said they may be able to help providing Lucky with a prosthetic leg. We will continue to liaise with them as Lucky’s stump heals. We have received hundreds of messages of support, love and well wishes for Lucky, along with so many kind, generous donations for her care. Every cent of the donations is being spent on Lucky’s vet care. We have driven hundreds of kilometres to take her to appointments, but do not take anything from the donations as it is vitally important that this is purely for Lucky. We have been able to attract media attention to the heinous crime of what has happened in the hope that this person is caught, prosecuted and made to answer. The RSPCA are investigating and we hope that someone will do the right thing and make the call to name names. We are so grateful to the kind person who has put forward the reward for information, and send our thanks to her again. Everything in our power is being done for Lucky, if she could heal on love alone from us and everyone out there she would be running round on four legs right now! Unfortunately, the reality of it is that it takes time and medical intervention for Lucky to be able to walk again properly. We believe that this will happen but it will take time; time we have for this gorgeous, precious baby. Thank you everyone for your ongoing love and support x
