Hi Everyone, I hope you are soaking up the final days of summer and keeping some spicy cider decongestant on hand for the approaching cold season! This past week we published a post on 107 ways to use coconut oil, which you can utilize this winter, summer, and anytime in between. There are so many uses for coconut oil outside and inside, for you or for four legged family members, 107 doesn’t even cover them all-so here are a couple special extras! 1. Coconut Oil Fire Starters If you’ve ever been camping, you’ve struggled to light a fire. It can pretty heart wrenching, to see that little flame flicker and then sputter out, taking all hopes of warmth (and that s’more with it.) To help get the flames roaring, make up some coconut oil fire starters. These are easy to use, and store, and thanks to coconut oils long shelf life can be kept in advance for quite some time-just be sure to store them in a cool dark place. You will need… -Cotton balls or cotton make-up pads -Several tablespoons-1/2 cup of coconut oil -A double boiler Directions 1. Melt down the coconut oil in a double boiler. If you don’t have a specialized double boiler, just place a heat proof bowl over a pot of simmering water. 2. Place the coconut oil in the double boiler and melt it down. Remove from heat and let it cool briefly. 3. Soak the cotton balls or make-up pads thoroughly. If you are using them be sure to break open the make-up pads just slightly to expose the thin inner fibers first. Store in an airtight container in a cool dark place until use. 4. To use, place under kindling and light. The beautiful thing about these is that they tend to burn easily for 5+ minutes-without nasty gasoline or lighter fluid. 2. Remove Bandages Painlessly While you could probably get away with any oil here, if you’re going to be rubbing it into my skin (and especially if a little one has a tough to remove bandage) coconut oil is a solid choice. With its anti-bacterial action, it’s also likely to keep foreign germs away from whatever cut or scrape you’re dealing with. On top of that, it is solid at room temp, which means you don’t have to deal with a liquid oil dripping as much when you try and apply it. It can still get runny though after contact with the skin, so keep a towel or paper towel under just in case. You will need… -Cottons swabs -Coconut oil Directions 1. Scoop out a bit of coconut oil with the cotton swab and gently peel the edge of the bandage back. Continue to rub the cotton swab even with the line of the bandage as you peel it away. If it’s getting stuck, apply a little more oil and let it saturate it for a minute. If you have a little scar tissue, feel free to apply a bit more oil to facilitate healing/fading. 3. Deodorize Critter Cages/Litterboxes Stinky litter boxes or critter cages? Pockets pets such as hamsters and mice, as well as larger pets like ferrets, don’t have the most pleasant smelling of living areas, especially if you have little one that’s a bit lax when it comes to cleaning the cage. Same thing goes for kitty’s litterbox. A bit of coconut oil can help deodorize the cage or litterbox safely, and help keep the odor down. It will also help sticky litter slide out of the box. You will need… -Coconut oil -Clean cloths Directions 1. Remove bedding/litter/ and all solids. Wipe down the base with water, then wipe dry. Follow up by rubbing a thin layer of coconut oil over the base. 2. Let the oil dry-or if you added too much, or find it is runny because it is in a warm area, use a clean cloth to wipe out the excess. 3. Add fresh bedding or litter over the oil. Want more remedies?
