Academic Toastmasters Club Shungu Zhakata Memorial Award for Excellence in Leadership 1 Reasons and Aims for this Award Shugu Zhakata, from Zimbabwe, was a Charter member of the Academic Toastmasters Club joining in April 2009 and worked in many leadership roles including Vice President Education, Web Designer and Web Master whilst he studied for his degree. Shungu was always ready to help and inspire. He made links with other University Toastmaster clubs and was always keen to get new members so that they also gained from the Toastmaster experience. He achieved Competent Communicator, Advance Communicator Bronze and Competent Leader awards. Shungu died tragically in a road accident 25 June 2012, ironically helping out a friend. He was 26 and had just finished his degree with a whole life ahead. But his good work and great potential cannot be thrown away like just another misfortunate statistic. Shungu was better than that. In the ensuing memorial that the Academic Toastmasters Club jointly hosted it was proposed that a memorial trophy created and awarded to the most inspired leader of the club in that year. Just like Shungu who strived for excellence the Academic Toastmasters Club will award the Shungu Zhakata Memorial Award for Excellence in Leadership annually (1st club meeting in July) to acknowledge Shungu’s special qualities and abilities as a leader, inspire other members to take the opportunities that are available to every Toastmaster at the Academic Toastmasters Club and remember that special member of our club that was so tragically lost. 3 Criteria This award is presented to the recipient who has demonstrated ultimate Leadership and Leadership skills preferably over the period of One Year (July 1st – June 30th ) either within the club, in the local community or on the Massey University Albany Campus. The Leadership should depict Toastmaster standards of; Displaying excellent communication Creating an attitude of ‘can do’ Inspiring others to take on supporting roles Including all members of the team Supporting newer members to get involved Promoting Toastmasters and the Academic Toastmasters Club Helping others to work towards being a good leader 2 Eligibility To be eligible to receive this award the recipient will be a current or a recent past member of the Academic Toastmasters Club (no more than 3 months) unless extraordinary circumstances prevail and as approved by the current committee and current club members dictate. 3 Process Proposed candidates for the award must be nominated and seconded by paid-up members of the Academic Toastmasters Club. The submissions should contain a short outline of why the person is nominated, what they have achieved, created, inspired and lead the club in some way (not necessary as a club officer) over the preceding Toastmaster year (100 words). All paid-up current club members will be eligible to vote on-line for their chosen candidate. In the event of a tie the two highest nominees will get the chance to inspire the members with a 2 minute presentation of their leadership skills at the next Academic Toastmaster Club meeting. Alternatively, the member who nominated or seconded the candidate will be able to speak for 2 minutes as to why their candidate should be the winner. To eliminate controversy or embarrassment the voting procedure will be done by secret ballot not by a show of hands. Voting will be made without personal bias or prejudice and based purely on the above criteria, the person considered to be the most worthy for this award, will keep this award safe and it will be handed back to the club in May the following year to be awarded to the next year’s recipient. 4 Terms of the Award Being a recipient of the Academic Toastmasters Club Shungu Zhakata Memorial Award for Excellence in Leadership is a special honour with the term lasting for 12 months. Each year the recipient will have his/her name and year etched onto the award. It will also be accompanied by a certificate so that the recipient will have a lasting memory of their special year. It is envisaged that there will be appropriate publicity and the club may wish the recipient to help with some promotion of the club in the ensuing year. This prestigious award and trophy belongs to the Academic Toastmasters Club and must not be taken overseas, misused or mislaid.
