Hiawatha Forest loomed behind the Evening Star Motel. As I stepped into the grass I looked into the distance. Tiny dots of light covered the sky; looking as flakes of white that are pinned to the underside of a snow globe. The deeper I looked, the more points of light became apparent. A seemingly deep darkness began to glow. Back home, I spread sage smoke with my hand. Cutting a birthday cake, I stepped outside towards city lights. The stars were hardly visible here, but a memory stuck to my eyelids. One star became five, until five stars became twenty. The sky opened up, and the stars crawled from the darkness like ants crawling from the forest floor.
