Hilarious article about Mountain Animation! Dam Jam Artist Spotlight #2: MOUNTAIN ANIMATION Let’s face it: New York kinda sucks. It’s way too expensive, it’s crowded, people are really brusque, and to get anywhere, you have to walk down these gross, sticky steps into a hot, stinking hole and then get in a huge, crowded, metal shoebox where your nose is stuck in someone else’s greasy hair while you get shuttled underneath a polluted river to get spat out in the most crowded place on earth. It really is unbearable. See? But there is one secret pleasure in the above scenario that will makes it all worthwhile: In between descending into the gross, hot, stinking hole and getting on the crowded, smelly, noisy shoebox, imagine this common scenario: An amazing band, playing for free, on the subway platform. It’s not uncommon, and talk to any New Yorker and they’ll tell you it’s the reason they can’t leave. We first came across Mountain Animation on the Bedford Avenue subway platform in Brooklyn, NY, and were captivated form the first note. Their dirty, energetic, and optimistic sound would be a tonic in any circumstance, and was especially welcome on a hot April morning in New York. This video gives just a wee hint of the joy of seeing them: We were so taken with these boys that we invited them on the spot! They promptly forgot about it. So I emailed them a month later. Here is a transcript of that negotiation: DENMARK ARTS CENTER: “Hey, guys! Caught your show in the subway at Bedford. Great stuff–we’d love to invite you to Denmark to play as part of a music festival the last weekend of July. Any interest? MOUNTAIN ANIMATION: “Is there lake swimming?” DENMARK ARTS CENTER: “You’re in luck! The festival takes place right on the side of a lake. It’s in late July–what would you need to see to be able to commit?” MOUNTAIN ANIMATION: “If there’s lake swimming, we’ll be there!” So: GREAT band, FUN folks, EASY to work with–what’s not to like? Best of all, we are thrilled to be the first organization to premiere this terrific band to the state of Maine! We feel a bit like missionaries, teaching natives about the magic of Jesus, here. Only, without the 600 year baggage of oppression, racism, and using religion to mask capitalist exploitation impulses… Okay, scratch that–too heavy handed. Let’s just say: Mountain Animation is coming to town. Denmark, you’re welcome! MOUNTAIN ANIMATION PLAYS THE DAM JAM AT 5PM!
