Hiroshi Fukada, Japansese ambassador to Vietnam, has proposed changing the name of Nhat Tan Bridge in Hanoi into Viet-Nhat (Vietnam-Japan) Friendship Bridge. Nhat Tan Bridge In a proposal sent to the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport, the ambassador also suggested delaying the completion date of the project to January 2015. According to the ambassador, Nhat Tan Bridge marks an important landmark in Vietnamese-Japanese relations, giving significance to the name Vietnam-Japan Friendship Bridge. Transport Minister Dinh La Thang has instructed the preparation of necessary procedures for the submission of the proposal to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. Ambassador Fukada has also recommended changing the inauguration date from October 2014 to Jan 2015. Mr. Fukada asked for the change in the inauguration date of the bridge so that the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism would be able to attend. After some discussion, the transport minister and the Japanese ambassador agreed to hold the ceremony on the same date as the inaugurations of terminal T2 at Noi Bai Airport and the Nhat Tan-Noi Bai road project in January 2015. These projects also used Japanese ODA. At 8.95km, with eight lanes, Nhat Tan Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Vietnam. The cost of the bridge will be around VND13.6 trillion (USD647.6 million), and construction was kicked off in March 2009.
