His central point -- that political power and economic power tend to be mutually reinforcing rather than in opposition -- is valid, but Id say hes taking the metaphor of going forwards/backwards in time much too literally. No one (that I know of) is advocating time travel as policy; the question is more one of change needing to justify itself or tradition needing to justify itself. I wonder whether the amusement of actually writing The mainstream left is a technocratic elite, with a cult of science and expertise and an ear for the unanimous catchphrase. This is anything but a meritocracy; it an entrenched intergenerational class hierarchy in The Atlantic is lost on him.
