Historia Chicana 14 October 2013 & Nota: Alan - TopicsExpress

Historia Chicana 14 October 2013 & Nota: Alan Pogue is a legendary documentary photographer of social movements including the Chicano movement of earlier (1960s-1970s) and later eras in Texas. He has been based in Austin, Texas all these more than forty years, as our friend and colega Dr. Virginia Raymond notes below, abogada y chicanóloga, who’s also based in Austin (see their contact information below). They sent a note this past Sunday and we emailed back and forth and are looking or seeking is the better word, to find the name and identity of this young Chicana Brown Beret member. The photograph was taken in 1981, and unless I am dead wrong, I assume the photograph was taken in Austin, Texas. Does anyone in our extended networks here and elsewhere know the name of this now (today) much older Chicana who marched in 1981 as a Brown Beret? She looks to be fifteen or sixteen years old here, which would make her today to be somewhere around 47 years old or so. If you do know her and her name, Alan Pogue would love to hear from you, and so would we on this listserv list. Alan wants to be able to gift her—whoever she is—a copy of his photograph that he took of her 32 years ago. That would be something to share with the children and grandchildren if there are/were any, and loved ones generally. Please contact Alan directly at the address included below and if you would be so kind Alan (and Virginia), in case we do identify who she is/was, please share the good news so that we may all know it too. And that’s the query for today, it’s a good one. I hope you/we can help answer this unsolved riddle, órale! – Roberto R. Maybe you know each other already, but just in case not. Roberto, you surely know my friend Alan Pogues work whether you know him personally or not. He has documented social justice struggles for forty years (more? after a certain point the numbers are too big), and his works include iconic photographs of the Brown Berets, the TFWU and the UFWU and laborers in the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America, the Mideast, and Africa. Alan, Roberto is a wonderful historian and a key to the network of Chicana and Chicano historians not only in Texas but across the U.S. I am wondering if Roberto and colleagues could help identify the woman Brown Beret whose portrait inspires so many of us. meanwhile, friends, take care, Virginia --- Virginia Marie Raymond Lawyer * Abogada 1006 East César Chávez Street Austin, Texas 78702 512.748.0940 phone 512.472.8263 fax virginiaraymond &&&&&&&&&&&&&& Historia Chicana Mexican American Studies University of North Texas Denton, Texas
