‘History repeats itself, first as a tragedy, then as a farce’ – Karl Marx. 1982 – Parliament was quickly convened, reason was given as making Kenya a strong, single party state; the leaders of the motion were Njonjo and Kibaki; sovereignty was cited; distribution of resources was denounced; Jaramogi, Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Anyona were dismissed as agents of foreign masters from the East; the West and its institutions, IMF and WB were praised and Moi was apotheosized to Mtukufu. We know what happened to Njonjo shortly after, and Kibaki later. 2013 – Parliament was quickly convened, reason was given as pulling Kenya out of the ICC; the leaders of the motion were Duale and Kithure; accountability for misuse of power was denounced; sovereignty was cited; Maina Kiai, John Githongo and others demanding accountability were dismissed as agents of foreign masters from the West; the East and its institutions, China and Russia were praised and Uhuruto were apotheosized. We are as yet to see what happens to Kithure or Duale…BUT… If there is any national farce more ridiculous than this, I am as yet to encounter it.
