¡¿Hola, que tal, amigos?! We successfully arrived in Managua - TopicsExpress

¡¿Hola, que tal, amigos?! We successfully arrived in Managua on Tuesday night. We almost had to land in Costa Rica due to a storm, but we made it! I´m staying with one other girl from SP named Siri with a host mom and her daughter in a neighborhood called Barrio Loma Linda. Her name is Tatiana and her daughter´s name is Vanessa. She is 26 and Vanessa is 8. Pictured below. They are very sweet and fun to spend time with, and Tati is very sassy! Tatiana´s mom owns a pharmacy which Tati runs out of a store in the front of their house. They are pretty well off for the barrio we live in and are probably considered middle class here. Siri is pretty fluent in Spanish and has been helping me learn. Tati also encourages me to try my Spanish because the Nicaraguans know very basic to no Spanish at all! Language learning has proved to be difficult to me, but I am learning a lot so far and will hopefully know much more than I thought I would in a month! Pray that I can remember the verbs and new words I´m learning. The food here is good, yet bland and filling. They do not eat spicy food here like I originally thought! A normal meal consists of fréjoles y arroz, some sort of meat, and a small amount of vegetables like tomatoes and cabbage. The water here is not safe to drink. I thought I wouldn´t get sick, but within the last 24 hours I´ve been having pains in my stomach and have been having some diarreah. Pray I am made well and don´t have a parasite! Every morning our group meets in the local church for a short devotional. This first week we´ve had free time after that to explore the neighborhood. I got to play soccer with some local kids and that was super fun. Today we traveled to el finca, the countryside. It was a large family gathering to send off a Servant Partners missionary couple to africa. All of Tatiana´s family was there as well as others. We ate lunch and walked along a river that is usually very full, but was quite empty due to a drought. It is rainy season here but there hasn´t been much rain! Tomorrow we are helping to jump start a tutoring program in the barrio. There are kids from 5 to 14 who don´t even know how to spell their own name. I will be teaching a 5 year old girl named Hadassah. Hopefully I can teach her the Spanish ABC´s and how to spell her name. Most kids in the barrio are illiterate so the goal is to help them build confidence to go to school and build relationships with the families in the community. Pray I can effectively communicate with her and her mom with the little Spanish that I know and that Hadassah will not be afraid to try! I will try to send out another update next week. Adios. Con amor, Susie
