Odkryłem z zaskoczeniem, że Polska, pomimo zakorzenionego mitu atrakcyjnego przybsza ze świata, nie wyczekuje wcale powrotów emigrantów. Ten przybysz jest atrakcyjny tylko na chwilę, potem natomiast budzi opór, że chce się wtrącać, burzyć status quo, pouczać. Że wie lepiej. Kiedy przyjeżdżam do Polski na kilka miesięcy, wydaje mi się krajem niemal idealnym. Hollywood PL for the Polish Independence Day ( 11.11.). What does your Polish identity mean to you? Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. A backbone. I am Polish, with no reservations. But I had a chance to exercise the mind in a world outside my own. That experience enriches— but I’ve also taken the road expected of an immigrant who’s lived in the States for the past 24 years. An expat cannot go back to his homeland for free. To my surprise, I found that Poland—in spite of its mythology, deeply rooted in literature, of welcoming a guest from the outside world— in reality doesn’t await the return of its émigrés. This guest, attractive for a moment, later becomes a stranger-to-be-resisted, as s/he allegedly wants to butt in, ruin the status quo, and to lecture others as to how things should be done. When I come to Poland for a few months, it seems to be nearly a dream country of mine.
