FIFA STANDARD: Arena Sukan generally offers a wide range of facilities, including four FIFA standard futsal courts. KUCHING: First opened for business in January 2008, Arena Sukan – a multi-sports complex offering a variety of sports under one roof – is now in its sixth year of operation. Arena Sukan generally offers a wide range of facilities, including four FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) standard futsal courts, nine BWF (Badminton World Federation) standard badminton courts, an activities room where functions, training or fitness classes are held, and MSN weight-lifting center for state athletes. Patrons can also take advantage of the Arena Sportshop there and the Cafe Arena which has an outdoor big screen to watch sports programmes. Shower and locker facilities are also available, along with ramps and toilets for the handicapped. The latest addition to this sports centre is a 24-hour fitness gym partnership with Level Up Fitness – LUF24HR. A one-stop multi-sports complex Arena Sukan was established at a time when there was a lack of good sporting facilities in Kuching. “We decided that no only do we want to provide a unique and comprehensive sports complex, we also wanted to raise the standard of facilities and activities in Kuching as well as the level of sporting excellence among our youngsters,” director of Arena Sukan, Rosemarie Wong recalled. What sets Arena Sukan apart from other complexes is its concept of offering a variety of sports under one roof, with an aim to constantly improve its facilities to serve customers better. Wong recalled that when Arena Sukan had first opened, the locals were complaining about the prices. However, having been in the industry for six years, customers now acknowledge that they are paying for quality facilities in a clean and healthy environment. “We are certainly a large modern sports complex, completely in a class of our own. Our customers appreciate our international court standards in a clean, green, spacious and safe environment. “In addition, our multi-functional sports floors are eco-friendly, seamless and cushioned to minimise injuries, especially impact on joints,”Wong added. Arena Sukan is not just a court-venue, it also offers coaching for a variety of sports and other related services as well. Weekly coaching classes are conducted for badminton, futsal, taekwondo (in collaboration with World Taekwondo Federation) and Wing Chun Martial Arts. “Apart from our regular grading sessions for these classes, at the end of each year, we also provide our students with an extra curriculum activities (ECA) report card which they can then submit to their schools for their ECA points,” Wong added. Aside from sports tournaments, carnivals, family days, birthday parties, other competitions like table-tennis, netball, and others which are regularly held at the complex, Arena Sukan also hosts prestigious events at its premises such as RHB Family Day and CMS Annual Games. Latest addition – LUF24HR On why they decided to set up a 24-hour gym in its premises, Wong said that they were always open to the idea of being pioneers in anything they do in Kuching. Although skeptical at first, she is now glad they went along with Level Up Fitness director Kenny Sia’s proposal. “When I had a look at the space – a small area in the midst of a large sports complex, I thought having a gym there is the missing puzzle,” Sia recalled. “A parent bringing a child for badminton classes, for example, can drop the child at the badminotn court, then run on a treadmill for a couple of minutes or attend a BodyCombat class. “There was so much great possibilities and synergy between Arena Sukan and Level Up Fitness that I found difficult to pass up on. The more I worked on this project with Arena Sukan, the more I fell in love with it,” he added. Overall, LUF24HR is a self-service, low-cost, no-contract, no-frills gym that provides an alternative to the full-service, full-featured, contract gyms. “We still give our members access to great equipment and a full-range of treadmills, but we do away with towels, lockers and sales staff sitting in reception. This is so that we can operate lean, and pass our cost-savings to our members. Trainers and group fitness classes are not built into the membership, but offered as an optional extra,” Sia explained. In doing so, membership prices have been kept down to as low as RM50 per month – one of the most affordable in town. As the gym operates on a 24-hour bases, this is an advantage for members who work irregular hours or those that want to get their exercise done at 5 am before getting on with the rest of their day. Patrons going for late night gym workouts can be rest-assured that LUF24HR has implemented tight security measures for their safety. Electronic wristbands with biometric verification will ensure only genuine members get access to the gym. There will also be CCTV-monitoring throughout the gym – with the exception of toilets and showers, panic buttons linked directly to LUF24HR staff’s handphone, and security guards stationed at the entrance of Arena Sukan’s complex between 12 midnight and 9am. Looking ahead, Arena Sukan will be including more coaching activities and fitness classes such as Yoga, Body Combat, Body Jam, Body Attack, and others, which will be conducted by trained instructors from Level Up Fitness. On future expansion plans, Wong mentioned that the next step would be to develop their Arena Sukan 3rd Building where new and exciting sports facilities will be introduced when it has been built. “At Arena Sukan, we pride ourselves in constantly improving our facilities to serve our customers better, and as such, we are always open to suggestions and welcome any new ideas for the complex,” Wong concluded.
