Home burns in Big River The lives of Art and Ursela Nicholson have been turned upside as of June 19, when their 1,700 square foot house and garage caught fire and burned down. The seven-year residents of Big River, Calif., the Nicholsons’ are shell shocked – losing family photos and personal possessions which have been in the family for many years. Art Nicholson told the Pioneer, that due to funding cutbacks from San Bernardino County, the Big River Fire Station closed. He said, “Parker Fire Department came as soon as possible, which was nearly 45 minutes by that time the house and garage were fully engulfed.” “My house was three-quarters of a mile from the fire station, the house might have been saved.” Art Nicholson said he was attempting to barbecue on a gas grill near the garage. He noticed the grill had flames on the underside and he used a hand held fire extinguisher to put out the flames. He left to get a garden hose and the garage caught fire and was in the attic. The fire started approximately at 6 p.m., the home was located at Rio Mesa and Commanche.
