Homeless Mother and two children still need help. Update on the story of the homeless mother raising two teen girls alone. What we have found so far is that there is no help for her in Shiawassee County. Shiawassee County has no homeless shelters only shelters for battered women. The only help we have found is free food and up to three days shelter. This unemployed woman cannot work due to a neck problem that could cause permanent paralysis. She is scheduled for surgery in two weeks and told that she will not be able to work for three to four months. They have no income only a food card. I have been on the phone with local agencies and have heard the same thing over and over, that is other counties take care of their homeless and have shelters while we in Shiawassee County have nothing but send our residents to other counties shelters. So a person can work their entire life paying taxes to Shiawassee County but get sick, needing help and Shiawassee County says… so sorry for your luck, thanks for your tax money but now you are in need go to Lansing or Saginaw or…. Bottom line, this lady has contacted the local agencies and so have I. She and her daughters need housing for the next three to four months. The agencies can’t help. As a community shouldn’t we take care of our own? Is it right that we try and shuffle our residents to other communities when they need help? With all of the empty houses….
