Honeymoon day 66: Bangkok, Thailand. After the late night, lack - TopicsExpress

Honeymoon day 66: Bangkok, Thailand. After the late night, lack of sleep the night before and the beer, we were in no mood for an early start and didnt really wake up until 10am. We did some planning for the next few stages of our trip and Kim went out to find some food (came back with some of my favourite hotdog buns, covered in chicken floss and a sweet, tasty but otherwise unidentifiable gloop) and got excited by a supermarket and the offer of help from a friendly local (a guy from Oz who has been living in Thailand for four years) who helped her order a rice and minced pork dish from a food stall outside with menus only written in Thai - proper local food! We then got the SkyTrain to the main train station to buy some tickets for the next few legs of our journey (first to Ayutthaya, then to Sukhothai, then to Chiang Mai). Pleased to be offered help by friendly officials as soon as we entered - the Indian railway staff could learn a lot from these guys. Found we could not get the first leg ticket as it was a commuter train so tickets only available on the day, got a ticket for the second leg - much more straight forward than the internet had led us to believe - but found the railway line for the third leg was closed so back to the drawing board on that. After we went to the citys main park for a quiet stroll (Olly had recommended this). Found a boating lake so hired a rowing boat (against Kims will, but she did actually enjoy it) and had a nice little row around the lake. Saw some large (meter plus) long lizards on the banks and tortoises sat around. All very pleasant. Walked on to the main shopping area of the city for a look around some more malls. It is quite a guilty pleasure, but we do rather enjoy these vast, modern shopping malls which we have come to be familiar with in KL on our trips there. Just the mix of shops and the endless and exotic food stalls make for a much more enjoyable experience than in the UK. Met Olly at Sams workplace (an upmarket hotel) for a drink before heading out to the other side of the city for some more drinks with her friends. Again we were surprised how expensive it is, though Ollie informs us it is the Thai peoples way to spend perhaps beyond their means when with friends but save money elsewhere. Another late night. Sadly no Pad Thai today.
