Honoring trains today. And a rime some years back -- my daughter, already long into her own family, used to call me from the commuter trains going north-ish from San Jose CA to San Francisco. She was commuting to work, we got to visit by phone more often, with the trains clackity-clackity-clack in the background like a metronome. Sometimes. I also used the same semi-express commuter, sliding through the Burlingame Station and wishing I could live near the tracks there... And a deeper, less distinct memory: of the train that whizzed by our early-childhood home, in Doubs, MD. Right at twilight, the train whistled and steamed past the crossroad at the corner of our home. I must have been four. Daddy had build and modernized (indoor plumbing!) this magnificent version of a family home out of an old, brick, 2+half story former general store/train station. I remember the posts where horses -before our time there - were once tied outside. Love of trains resulted. And train songs! Love the Arlo Guthrie version I saw performed here in City of Santa Cruz in the very early 1980s. Just found this very personable Cash version, thanks FB friends!
