How does one go about getting a device reblazoned? I was recently commissioned to do some heraldic art for a friend, and when I checked the O and A I found: Paly azure and argent, on a bend sinister Or five lozenges gules. Unsure how many pales there should be, I decided to check a heraldic dictionary to see if there was a default number. Instead, under paly I found: The number should always be specified; so I went to the original submission in the ILoI and found her submission, which answered the paly question (6) but raised a couple more. As drawn, I would have blazoned the lozenges as squares... Shouldnt this have been sent back to be redrawn? Next, what is the default posture of lozenges? I would have thought it would be vertical (per pale). After consulting with the client, I determined that she wanted the longer axis of the lozenges running across the bend sinister,, should that that be blazoned as on a bend sinister Or five lozenges bendwise gules? So what I get as a final blazon is: Paly of six azure and argent, on a bend sinister Or five lozenges bendwise gules. Is that a better description? Finally, if the purpose of blazon is so any competent heraldic artist can read the words and draw more or less the same thing, doesnt the original (registered) blazon fail miserably? Has the Coh really gotten that soft, or am I being anal above and beyond the usual high standard for heralds?
