Hulme is When the Heart is ! When the issue of a park for the area began to be discussed in 1858, it was always referred to as The New Park for Hulme and Chorlton. At that time Moss Side was not yet amalgamated into Manchester, so it was the rates of the people from Chorlton, Hulme and Whalley Range who eventually paid for the park in 1868. The site of the park was chosen as it was roughly of equal distance between both Hulme and Chorlton, and the lodge houses were named for the area closest to them. I often forget this when writing things to put on here, so today I am going to write a few little bits and pieces on Hulme. The magnificent Hulme lodge which stood at the Alexandra Park Road main gates from 1869 until being demolished in the 1970s. Originally the house was intended to act as a home for park staff but this proved too costly for the council and by 1880 the house was being let to tenants.
