Hundreds of pounds of food stolen from Sumner County food bank By Jamey Tucker, (News 2) SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. - Burglars hit the Sumner County Food Bank in Gallatin twice last week, stealing hundreds of pounds of meat that were supposed to go to families for Christmas. The burglars hit first Monday, Nov. 17, then again on Nov. 19 when pastor James Gill was preaching at Liberty Baptist Church nearby. I asked for prayer that night, that Wednesday night, for those who broke in, said Gill, who is executive director of the Food Bank. But then apparently the same people broke in because the fingerprints were the same, as I understand it. The burglars apparently climbed over a chain-link fence with barbed wire then broke down a door leading to three freezers where the food bank kept meat. We lost several hundred pounds of meat, Gill told News 2. It broke my heard because we give food away. We dont sell it; we dont trade for it. The Sumner County Food Bank distributes food every month to families who need help feeding their families. The food banks Christmas food delivery is set for Dec. 16. Im just sorry it happened, but what Im really sorry for is our clients that could very well have less at Christmas than they should have, Gill said. The food bank currently doesnt have security cameras and Gill said he is afraid theyll be hit again before Christmas. He cant find a security company that will install a system, so he plans to purchase one and have it installed himself. I dont want to spend money thats been donated for food. Ive never done that and I dont want to start doing that. But I dont have any choice, Gill said. Pastor Gill told News 2 that hes priced several security systems with cameras for about $800 to $1,000. The Gallatin Police Department is investigating and Gill said officers and deputies from the Sumner County Sheriffs Department are patrolling the area frequently.
