I AM SO PROUD OF THE COURAGE SHOWN BY ONE OF MY BEST STUDENTS - TopicsExpress

I AM SO PROUD OF THE COURAGE SHOWN BY ONE OF MY BEST STUDENTS Brinda Sarkar from Sri Shikshayatan College, Calcutta. Please read her story. I was harassed in the Metro rail yesterday but I chased the miscreant and got him arrested. And by doing so it wasn’t a right I exercised. It was a responsibility I fulfilled. A harassed woman is a victim only if that’s what she wants to believe. I think a harassed woman has a job at hand and has no time or reason to brood. She has the responsibility to stop the offender before he targets others and has the power to do so too – by filing an FIR with the cops. It’s an open secret that India is becoming unsafe, but what are we doing enough to make it safe? “Liking” facebook pages on the issue and holding candle light vigils do a lot to spread the word but if we have an opportunity to be more proactive, we cannot shy away from it. If women accept harassment without reacting, it amounts to telling the miscreants that it is ok to do so. It’s not enough to curse the chap in your heart and pray to god to punish him while shying away from going to the police thinking it’s useless. The guy I got arrested yesterday has got bail today (it was a bailable offence). But he now knows that the attitude of women in the city is changing. He will not harass a woman again as if he does, he knows he goes down big time. Just think of how many potential victims got saved simply because one person had the guts to drag him to the cops. It just takes that one moment of courage to shout out loud when a wrong is done. Please don’t drown that voice of courage in you. Be alert, be fearless. And believe that Satyamev Jayate (the truth alone triumphs).
