I always post this on Carl Sagans birthday. I find its message - TopicsExpress

I always post this on Carl Sagans birthday. I find its message particularly powerful as I think of Dr. Gruber and the impact he had on so many. It is the duty of all he touched to pass on to others what he gave to us. I will always appreciate his wit, his laughter , and his support of the students in the classroom, and in whatever endeavor they were engaged in. If he happened to miss a performance(which was rare) he would go out of his way to apologize for not being able to attend. I dont think it was just because the students looked forward to his presence that he attended. He was proud of his students and wanted to be present for them and offer his support and guidance in any way he could. It was never just part of his job, a duty, or an obligation, it was just an expression of who he was, and what his students meant to him. I have seen many expressions of gratitude for what Dr. Gruber gave to his students and colleagues over the years. We must remember that no matter how much he meant to us, we always meant more to him. If we can care for those we come in contact with as much as he cared for all he touched, we will keep his spirit alive, and the hearty laugh will forever echo across the campus.
