I am deeply outraged by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s announcement of their partnership with the non-Hispanic run Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to create Visión, a newspaper to target the Hispanic Community. Apparently, George Franco, CEO and President of the Hispanic Chamber, didn’t read that the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s mission is to advocate and promote Hispanic businesses. It seems that El Conquistador is only good enough for free advertisement when it comes to the Hispanic Chamber, while money making ventures are reserved for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which has a staff that employs a very small percentage of Hispanics, with none in leadership positions. I guess it takes a non-Hispanic owned newspaper like the Milwaukee Journal to reach the Hispanic Community. El Conquistador Bilingual Latino Newspaper has been around for more than 16 years. We are the only weekly Hispanic owned newspaper in Milwaukee. We are the only newspaper that hosts a Wedding & Quinceañera Expo, a Latino Family Expo, and a Lifetime Achievement Awards Dinner. Our Facebook page has more than 4,000 followers. Yet the Hispanic Chamber chose the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which, for years, has almost completely ignored our community in its news pages. A newspaper that is losing readership and is now coming after our readers. This action will actually harm a Hispanic-owned business in the same field. Thus, it’s not just outside the mission of the Chamber; it runs directly counter to it. This action will make it harder for a Hispanic owned business to survive because the Chamber is funding a competitor to existing Hispanic owned businesses that are non-Hispanic owned. This is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s third attempt in reaching the Hispanic Community. La Guia and Aqui were both short lived publications written and publish by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that failed to reach the Hispanic Community. The Hispanic Chamber is an organization that deals with Hispanic Business; for the chamber to do this, they are sending a message that Hispanics are incapable of proving a sound service of information to our community. We don’t need outside organizations to deliver news to our community in competition with Hispanic-owned businesses that already provide this service. As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel opens and closes Spanish Newspapers, El Conquistador has been there. We have stood by our community, and brought information and news important to our community. “Avante”. We will continue to thrive because we have a bond with our community that the Journal Sentinel has struggled – and repeatedly failed – to emulate. What makes this insult that much hurtful, is that “Visión” mission is what I had proposed to Franco that HCCW do with El Conquistador. Victor Huyke Publisher El Conquistador Bilingual Newspaper
