I am going to step gingerly onto my soapbox for a moment. Let me begin by saying, catchphrases and cutie-sisms (my term) annoy me. Like fingernails across a chalkboard. Like a car coming down the road with woofers that rattle my windows with painful subsonic sound waves. I was listening to NPRs Fresh Air, an interview with Bryan Cranston (from Breaking Bad) about his brief foray into standup comedy in the 80s, and when describing audience reactions he said, sometimes there was laughter, and other times there were crickets. There is the catchphrase -- crickets. Meaning, of course, nobody responded so you could hear the crickets (if there were crickets singing, so I guess it would be a seasonal phrase). Enough, already!!! Ive heard crickets so many times the past couple of months from people talking about...well, about nobody saying anything. Just say...It was quiet. or Nobody said a word. or Silence. Leave the damn bugs out of it! Please! How about cutie-isms? Im sorry...lots of toes are about to get stepped on, but my biggest pet peeve cutie-ism is the word -- congrats, for congratulations. Oh...my...God...! Every time I see the word congrats I want to run from the room screaming like I was being chased by aliens. No...I believe I am being chased by aliens! No earthling in his or her right mind could possibly invent such a word. There are others, but Ive been up on the soapbox long en... Damn...soapbox fell. What? Crickets...
