I am in the process of going through 600 friend requests here on Facebook. Heres why I didnt follow or friend you: 1. You dont write in English. 2. You dont put your job title on Facebook (almost always thats a good indicator of someone who doesnt put good content into Facebook). 3. You only have baby photos on your wall. Thats cool for your family, but Im looking for something more. 4. You have no friends in common with me. Listen, I have 5,000 friends and they are well curated from across the tech industry. If you cant make friends with a few of those people then Ive found that to be a good marker that you really arent into tech. 5. You have cat photos on your wall. :-) 6. You friended me then you ran out of friend spaces (Facebook limits us both to 5,000 total friends). 7. You only have food and wine posts on your wall. 8. You have fewer than 10 posts total. 9. You have your privacy turned up so high I cant see anything about you (I hate that, make yourself easier to check out if youre gonna friend me). 10. No meat. Im not talking about Turkey meat. Im talking about posts that actually say something deep about who you are, what you are passionate about, and what you care about. If all you got is selfies I probably wont be friending you. Even then I cant friend everyone so its a bit of a lottery after that. Looking for people who bring me great content. Still have 300 requests to go. Yes, if Ive met you face-to-face Im more likely to friend you. Extra points if you got me a great whiskey. :-) Part of the reason Im doing this is I have to put together a social media masterclass for London on December 13th with Thomas Power. Looking forward to that. Its amazing how few people really do social media well. How do you decide whether to friend someone?
