I am really surprised and disappointed in my provincial and federal colleagues Rob Fleming, Carole James and Murray Rankin for sending this letter out to certain residents in Victoria. In my view it is inappropriate for a provincial or federal MLA or MP to publicly endorse a candidate for municipal election (where we have no registered parties) in an area that they are tasked to represent. As MLAs or MPs we have to work with whomever the electorate chooses to represent them municipally. Issuing statements like this Only Dean Fortin has the experience and commitment to build a more dynamic vibrant and progressive City is disrespectful of other candidates. And if another candidate is elected, this message really starts an MLA/MP - Mayor relationship off on the wrong track. While I recognize that only one of Stephen Andrew, Ida Chong, Dean Fortin or Lisa Helps (or another candidate) can win election as Mayor on Saturday, the fact that so many dedicated and experienced individuals are running is a very positive endorsement of our democracy. My only hope is that with such a group of outstanding candidates to choose from, the voter turnout is high. No matter who wins the mayoral race, when there is a high voter turnout, everyone in our community wins. In Saanich I commit to working with either mayoral candidates Richard Atwell or Frank Leonard and in Oak Bay with either Cairine Green or Nils Jensen. I also commit to working with any council member elected in either of these municipalities. Thank you all for letting your names stand for election.
