I am very late for this Day 3 of the 3 x 5 challenge that Vanessa Lemen invited me to participate in. In a few hours I will have to post todays as well. MY BAD!!! After years of many board graphics, t-shirts, logos, catalogs, advertisements, product designs, I wanted to pursue comics but realized I had to really work on my figures if I was going to make anything that was remotely comic book standard. I had drawn them in elementary school through high school for my friends and I, a joke strip called the Prehistoric Creeps, but nothing really commercial. Doing them professionally seemed a long way off. There were no real representational art schools left at that time. But there were these new art ateliers popping up from Los Angeles to San Diego. I got involved, and after a slow first year starting off I pretty much gave up everything to study and get as good as I could at this newly reemerging realism/academic stuff and I can say I am still heavily involved and love drawing from life whenever I can. These are a few collections of images pertaining to the academic foundation of figure drawing, portrait drawing, gesture drawing, and studies from reference in charcoal and gouache that spent years working on improving. I have a 5 foot stack of old drawings from all the years of hard work I put in to studying. One day I will crack that stack open and scan a few. One of the portraits, the shaved headed feller is my very long time good friend Joe Budro that is one of the demonstrations and the cover of my Gnomon DVD Drawing the Male Portrait. And all of this stuff that you see I teach at our studio in Encinitas, California that Vanessa and I own and run called Rev Art Academy. I also teach with the accredited program at LAAFA in Los Angeles and online with Gnomon and CGMA, all great programs. On this day, day 3 I am going to next nominate the insanely awesome cartoon master and all around great guy Cazi Tena to participate in this 3 x 5 art frenzy.
