I ask these tax the church people ... just what are you going to tax? Gifts to anyone or any organization are not taxable income and the individual or organization did nothing to EARN that gift. If even if you were to try an argue that giving is taxable as income, by the time you remove all legitimate deductions such as payroll, utilities, mortgages etc there would be nothing left to tax. The only thing that remains to be taxed would be property. Under what pigeon hole are you going to put them in? Houses of Worship are not office building, even though they have offices. They are not warehouses or manufacturing facilities that make a widget. One could tongue in cheek argue that they are the House of God and thus a residence. To the bigger issue here is that black churches constantly preach politics from the pulpit, telling their membership exactly who to vote for and are NEVER scrutinized for that action.
