I attended a conference last week at Brown on language learning technologies. As we wrapped up the conference, the organizers gave us a tour of the librarys new digital media lab. Its a room with 12 gigantor LCD screens assembled ostensibly for close image study and for other exciting as-yet-unidentified modes of collaboration. The lab director basically explained we have this giant LCD wall and we dont know what to do with it. You guys got any ideas? In other words: they built a 12 million pixel solution in search of a problem. Its wholly impractical as the CPU driving it is unequipped for a lot of the rendering that would make it useful. We brought up lots of maps, and static macro images of texts, as if to say see? Its good for something! I tried bringing up different video and image sites and everything more or less failed. Eventually, I broke down and resorted to the only thing that could save the experience for me: a giant wall full of cat bounce. Alas, it choked on the Flash rendering. Cest la vie.
