I didnt make a New Years resolution this year because I was too busy driving around New York State in the dark feeling hurt and confused and resentful. Growing up, I heard a lot about treating others the way I would like to be treated, (and read it every day on the steps of Booth Free,) but today, I realized how messed up it is that no one ever really told me to treat myself the way that I expect others to treat me. I guess many people live their lives flinching in anticipation of being hurt by those around them, but Im the opposite. I anticipate kindness and respect from others, often to a fault, but rarely do I ever extend that same basic kindness and respect to myself. So, I guess thats it. I resolve to honor myself the way that I dream of being honored by the people in my life who respect me the most. Not just for 2015, but as an integral part of how I live in the world and navigate my life. Damn it.
