I dont usually do this on a Sunday but some catch up is needed >.> said the sausage to the bread. A piece on misconceptions. This one makes me twitch, personally. It gets bandied about as a truth and spread throughout the schools by those who should know better. Here it is. Who here at one time or other has thought or said that a particular strengthening exercise is a Girls one? Most often I hear it attached to pushups on the knees. When I ask people who pass this along, either other trainers or females who have been programmed into thinking it, Why is it? I usually get a response that generally translates into, Because that was what I was told. Girls are weaker, If a female wants to do a one arm push up or chin up, guess what? She can. The only thing stopping her is herself. Either directly or indirectly. Indirectly because shes listened to someone tell her that she could not. Directly because she has told herself that she could not. Its not a real pushup, if you dont think it is then theres a powerfully strong probability that you are not doing them right. Ive had classes of big muscly guys asking me to stop with the routines because they couldnt use their arms anymore. Id only been using knee pushups as my push exercise. If your Public or Private school PE teacher is telling you that theyre girl push ups then they dont know what they are talking about and are doing two detrimental things. 1. They are spreading that women are weak and need special consideration to the point that they have to be given a sub par exercise. And therefore by extension all those who do that exercise are also weak. A womans weakness is only the thoughts that she allows to sit in her mind from others and herself. 2. They are missing how a knee pushup is a vital link in both gradual strength gains and physical therapy. Coupled with the segregation between those who are still at a knee push up stage and those doing a heavier push up. Success is success. There is no comparison between two people other than the person that you were and the one that you train to be and become. Next time you go to say, Thats a girls pushup, to a girl then stop yourself. Next time you go to say that to a male then stop yourself. Being female is not an affliction. I look forward to the day that new female students and clients coming into our school of fitness and martial arts have not had such detrimental thoughts as their norm. It is a great thing to watch a female like this come into the realisation that she is capable of being strong and assured physically. But lets skip the negative part and go right to strong and assured. I hope that the weekend has been great for you as it has us and that the coming week is excellent and productive. - James
