I drove (my elderly neighbor) Emma to the Ft. Myers airport first - TopicsExpress

I drove (my elderly neighbor) Emma to the Ft. Myers airport first thing this morning. Stella rode along. It was a quiet 30-minute ride, as Stella and I were already missing Emma. Silly, I know. Its strange how strongly weve bonded over the past few months. Stella and I had no idea, when we stopped to introduce ourselves to Emma when she moved in on our street, that wed become such close friends. Like family. I find airports both happy and sad. Travelers leaving friends and family are hugging and teary-eyed. Most of those arriving are excited and looking forward to visits or vacations. We got to the airport early enough to order hazelnut lattes at a Starbucks kiosk. Emma is old-school when she travels. She still dresses up. A nice blazer, linen blouse, and slacks. I loved the fact she wore her tennis shoes! Stella made sure Emma had plenty of hard candy in her purse, peppermints and butterscotch. I made sure she had a good book. We hugged the stuffin (as my grandmother used to say) out of Emma at her concourse. Emma was taking a direct flight to Cincinnati. Thats where shell be met by her family. Theyre coming together for Labor Day. Emma wont be gone long, just until Wednesday. Stella is watching Emmas white kitten Hope. Stella has a small dog named Smokey, the two get along well. Stella and I couldnt go past security. But we waited and watched until Emma found her gate. Then we sat for a bit in the main terminal until her plane took off. Were going to plan a Welcome Home for Emma when she returns. It doesnt matter that shes only gone four days. We want to do something fun and special, that shell never expect. Its all in the planning stages!
