I felt really emotional when I heard the following in a class in Auckland. I did not raise my hand in objection, for that I am sorry to myself. Please allow me to express and organise what I really think of about this. He said HK protest is due to emotional factor, HK people feel that their economic significance in China is decreasing. Their dissatisfaction towards the Chinese government is the trigger of this protest. Second, jealousy. They feel that they loose their advantage and competitiveness among other Asian countries. Therefore once again they blame the Chinese government for that. HK seems to be fine when they are under the English government, they also do not have universal suffrage. Why would not they say anything under the British Government but protest now? to people who said this, there are couple of point for you: 1. You may interpret the issue is based on emotional factor, after all, that is your interpretation. But please do not loose the point. HK now is asking for the basic right to vote, as promised by the Chinese government in 1997. Please note that this is the main source of the protest.: rights and promise, for that, the protest is justified. You may not agree with the means of achieving the goal, but please do not devaluate the spirit of the protest by saying it is just an emotional trigger. It is unfair to the protestors. 2. It is because China is our home country. We have higher expectation in the Chinese government. We hope that will be more responsible for its Hong Kong people, than that of the British government. We still protest, because we still believe there is hope in China, our home country. Because we still hope, we will expect in our government will have a serious conversation with its people. 3. However, the biggest disappointment is yet there is even no room for discussion between the government and the citizens. Government seems to have neglected what they are set up for. by and for the people seems to be a pure slogan for the current government. When the linkage between the people and the government is broken, people would be left of no choice but to protest in order to call out for their wants. 4. The government may be disappointing, but we are not going to make ourselves the same as them. We have a sense of belonging to this land. We at least do not loose hope in ourselves. We do not want to be the future China, where we cannot express our wants. That is why we choose to protest, rather than being ignorant to what is going to happen in HK. We kept faith in our goals. Before trying to stereotype the protestors, please try to talk to them, ask what they wanted on our land, why do we still try to call out our wants to the government, before putting your own interpretation on them.
