I found DAWN exciting, spectacular and most important, genuinely fascinating. Weve never seen anything like the ape society depicted in the first half of the film on screen before, and for that alone, I give it high marks - as mainstream Hollywood entertainment aimed at the undemanding superhero blockbuster crowd. And yet, I find both films in this re-boot prequel series to be apologetic for Caesar becoming the ape messiah. Both films play the apes rise to dominance very safely. They remind me of the various POTA spinoffs in Marvels great black and white comic magazine, or the unfilmed treatments and scripts for the original films - theyre fun, but they seem to just miss what the Arthur P. Jacobs films were all about. Neither one has delivered the knockout ending that four out of the five films in the original series are remembered for, and I find it curious that so many of the reviewers for this latest film called it bleak. Have they never seen the films from the sixties and seventies? Some episodes of the RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES cartoon were darker than this! Still, I got the apes on horseback shooting guns I wanted, and look forward to seeing it again. Side note: the wing nuts claims that this film is anti-gun propaganda is as ridiculous as most of their claims; its anti-war, a theme that ran through the original series.
