I found a really interesting thought in a book I was reading and just wanted to share. (Context: a hadith being disputed narrated by a female (Fatimah) who stated that the Prophet SAWS had told her that a husband does not have to provide for his wife upon him divorcing her (Pg. 30, al Muhaditthat). Some Companions criticized Fatimah for narrating the hadith. Aisha did so, and explained that the ruling for Fatimah was because of some danger staying at her ex-husband... But she (Fatimah) continued narrating the hadith, which left an impact on later on jurisprudence. Now Umar refused to give a ruling on the basis of Fatimahs hadith for the good reason it contradicted the Quran. Even so, though he and others might have wished that she would stop narrating this hadith, he did not try to prevent her from doing so. What happened with this hadith illustrates the respect accorded to women in the society of that time, the authority they enjoyed, and strong belief in the principle that neither men nor women could be prevented from acquiring and transmitting knowledge and their understanding of the religion. I find it interesting that even though the Companions did not agree with this hadith, they did not stop her from learning and expressing her understanding of the hadith. I hope inshaAllah this inspires us all to keep learning from others, whether they agree or not, regardless of gender, and to educate ourselves for Allah swt.
