I got Eva Hesse from DeeDee Folkerts The idea is to occupy Facebook with art, breaking up the monotony of selfies (dear god the selfies) and bit strips. Whoever likes this or comments on it will receive an artist and should post this status update with this text. So I have to admit that as much as I love art, I wasnt initially too keen on Hesses work. I tend to not be a fan of minimalism as a genre, not because I think it isnt art, but because it doesnt speak to me as clearly as other works. But researching Eva Hesse gave me a new appreciation for her as an artist and a human being. She created an impressive collection of work in 10 short years before she died of a brain tumor. She escaped Nazi Germany on a kindertransport. Her mother committed suicide when she was 10. All of these horrific events in her life, full of complicated causes and effects, perhaps drove her to seek simplicity in form, which does not mean simplicity in interpretation. These figures really struck me because they are almost transparent, which means they appear to almost glow depending on the natural light, and because there is no prescribed arrangement to them as an instillation. They go where the curator of the museum says they should go, and thus they are dynamic and flexible. As she said Life doesnt last. Art doesnt last. moma.org/collection/object.php?object_id=81930
